Both for commercial and residential, I’ll add - lots of the residential towers built up near train stations in Tokyo area use these, with the cars going up the middle of the building (while all the residential units face with windows outdoors). In order to get your car there’s an interface panel near the parking entry/exit to dial your number, and also one at the garage doors to safely open and close that to get your car out. Also a remote control tied to your parking spot.
Ask me how I know
When I lived in a small town there was a small standard parking lot outside the apartments, but in a big city? Space is definitely a premium.
Also in other news I actually held this in my hand an hour ago:

Unfortunately 5500 JPY/$40 or so is too much for shits and giggles for a system I don’t even have.
Man, jealous of you living in Japan... I would probably live inside a hard-off.
When I was last in Japan, I went on a quest all around Tokyo to find a toy model Toyota Century. I happened to stumble across a Hard-off when looking for another shop in the same complex.
I didn't know about the store, but once I was there I didn't want to leave.
I try to avoid collecting stuff as a general rule, but there was so many cool and interesting things there from vintage videogames, electronics, music instruments, toys... Even worryingly realistic looking BB guns. You'd never find that stuff in a store here, and if you did it would be extremely expensive. Stuff was fantastically cheap compared to the more touristy places in Akihabara etc.
I ended up buying a 3DS and a bunch of games for my kids.
Amusingly, the photos weren't wiped, so it was interesting to see a young boy taking a bunch of photos of his family and seemingly age up over the years. Some of the last ones were close ups of muscly anime men and anime girl boobs, which was rather adorable. I wiped it all before giving it to my kids.
But for me, I saw so many diecast cars of amazing variety. I decided to buy one, and as I selected it, I saw another... then walked up to the counter and literally sitting on the counter was a MR2... So I had to buy that as well. Even got a bunch of dumb stuff like a dealer-extra pull back Subaru Forester (my partners car) that had sensors that could sense a wall and auto brake.
I'm glad I didn't have much of a suitcase because I would have just filled it full of junk.
Speaking of which, I've been building my own little shrine to this bizarre series on my shelf.

Much cheaper than 5000 yen though! I found a copy on Yahoo Auctions, packed in with 'F1 Circus' for 1,400 yen. I had ordered some car parts, so I was able to ship them with it.
