Thanks all! Great suggestions. It was a tough one, but I’ve settled on ‘Taro’ - it rolls off the tongue easy, and a google search tells me that it’s the Japanese equivalent of ‘John Smith’.

Akazawa Taro, born March 8th, 18 years old. He will graduate from high school this year, but failed to get into university. He will be a ronin from spring.

Taro’s last name is ‘Akazawa’. I gotta say, it was hard not to choose the name ‘Baka’ because ‘Baka Akazaka’ is a very fun thing to say.

I haven't had a girlfriend in 18 years and I'm currently looking for one. Ideal type: Kind, cute and honest. Someone who has great style and who will love only me.

Yeesh. Is this an introductory bio or a dating profile?

…Good luck with getting this ideal girl, Taro.

: This is so annoying! Let's just go home.

: I'm back.

…And here we are at Taro’s home.

Wow. This is a far cry from Hiro’s messy apartment. It looks like a very nice traditional Japanese home, with Shoji paper doors and a very leafy looking zen garden out the back.

...Taro clearly lives with his parents…

: Welcome back!

Well well, who's this?

Older sister Aki Akazawa.
Born April 5th, 19 years old.

Although she is one year older than Taro, she was born in April and he was born in March, so they are in the same grade.

I was a classmate of Taro in high school. This year I passed the university entrance exam and became a university student.

She's pretty popular, but she doesn't have a boyfriend.

Incidentally i love the stylistic thing this game introduces, where it introduces a new character by fading out the background and giving us their bio.

: Aki, did you call me?

: No, there wasn't.

: Hey, stop calling me by my first name. Call me Big Sister.

: It's okay, we're classmates.

: Don't be stingy.

One of you guys can probably explain this much better than me, but I understand this has something to do with the honorific names Japanese call each other. It’s a sign of respect to call your sister ‘Big Sister.’ Taro doesn’t seem to think it’s needed since they were in the same year at school.

: I was your classmate until high school. This year I'm a university student. You're a student who's just repeating the entrance exam. Don't lump us together.

: You're so blunt when someone is feeling down…

: Ahhh, I'm so angry

: Damn Aki…

Well. It seems these two have a typical sibling rivalry. Clearly Aki doesn’t think too much of her brother, since he’s not going to University...

: Taro, are you back?

Father: Masaaki Akazawa
Age: 47
Occupation: Novelist
Hobby: Collecting Japanese Swords

Uh. This must be Taro’s father… He looks like he's one of those guys who takes cosplaying as a samurai way too seriously.

He doesn't seem like someone we want to disappoint, lest he unleash his sword on us….

: I hear you're not going to a prep school... I heard it your mother.

: Oh, I'm not going.

: If that's the case, you'll have to study really hard or you won't pass next year.

Gosh, even Taro’s father is on his case about the whole ‘not getting into University’ thing…

Not all of us can spend our days writing samurai love novels, Dad.

: Okay, Dad.

This must be Taro's mother!

Mother: Hiromi Akazawa
Occupation: Full-time housewife
Personality: Cheerful
Age: 40

: Don't be so noisy!

: Taro is a hard worker when it's time to do something.

: Hey Taro?

: It's okay.

The screen fades out…

And we fade into the living room.

Hey, check out these digs!

The Akazawa family seems to be doing alright for itself, living it up in Tokyo with space for an outdoor garden, spacious dining room and a giant living/ entertainment room.

I guess samurai love novels are good business!
