Part 91 - Whilst we’re here…

Because we're dirt poor and perhaps because Hiro needs to get some aggression out on some residents, I decided we should revisit the security guard job whilst we're back in L.A.

We've also got a number of new items from the Anchorage Witch, and it was an opportune moment to see if they do anything worthwhile.

Our run started just about the same as any other, patrolling the corridors, beating up junkies, when suddenly…

A DOOR OPENED!

… I've been playing this game for hours, and this is the first time I realised these doors open…

Could it be one of our new items giving us the ability to unlock them?

… Actually, no.

Turns out you could always do this. You just needed to hit the primary action button....

What had thrown me was pushing up against the door was how you opened them in the first game, and doing so in this one makes a loud and audible ‘thud’ sound effect that I thought was the game telling me it was locked...

This seems so damn obvious now that I'm pretty embarrassed.

At any rate - opening each door will either reveal nothing, find a treasure chest which contains a health or attack power item, or spring an enemy battle on you.

Looking at our inventory, out of all the things we bought, there’s only three here that we seem to be able to use in these battles.

The Whip, The Vital Point Needle and the Cute Mask

The Whip can be used against enemies, but it doesn't seem all that much more powerful than Hiro's regular attacks, so I stopped using it pretty quick.

One enemy type however, seemed to enjoy it very much.

The Vital Point Needle on the other hand, is amazing. It is basically a one hit kill for all the enemy types.

With our new needle and our new found knowledge of door opening, we are able to travel from floor to floor, clearing rooms.

Eventually in the last door on the top floor, we encounter the gang boss!

Gang boss or no, he's still vulnerable to being stabbed with our needle.

And with that, I think that’s the ‘boss’ of the security guard game defeated, though other enemies still spawn and you can continue fighting.

Oh what’s that Hiro’s wearing? Why it’s the Cute Mask!

Now I couldn’t quite shake this image out of my head.

No, not the image of a mask wearing Hiro running through the hallways, syringe in hand stabbing all the residents of this complex…

No, the actual mask itself. This looks so familiar to me, I swore that I’d come across it on my own adventures in Japan...

And sure enough, I have...

It’s Peko Chan - the character you will find on Japanese ‘Milky’ candy products!

What Peko Chan is doing in this 1993 car racing video game, I do not know. Somehow I don’t think this was signed off by Corporate….

But then again, according to Japanese urban legend, Peko Chan is a cannibal that developed a taste for human flesh when her own mother feed her part of her arm so she wouldn't starve during the post war crisis.

So, uh. There you go.

At any rate, if you’d like your own creepy Peko Chan mask to wear whilst terrorising residents with a syringe in your own prefecture, you’re in luck, because there’s an active auction for one of these masks.
