I actually know the answer to what these mean! I learned it reading the master, Hokudaiji Aritomeno's column in Holiday Auto Magazine. It's referring to the Drive Train of the car.

FF refers to a front engined, front wheel drive car.

Or in Hoku's sage words:


: The engine is running. I’ll take care of the whole thing. The official name is FF. Does not have a propeller shaft. So you can expand your connections.



FR refers to front engined, rear wheel drive car.

Or, as Hoku would put it:


: FR is when the engine is located in front of the driver and drives the vehicle. It has been around for a long time, so it is technically perfect and the driving experience is great.



MR refers to mid-engined, rear wheel drive, aka gods combination as it's what most MR2's and Ferrari's use.

But don't take my words, just ask Hoku:


: A vehicle with the engine located just behind the drivers seat is called an MRX. Often used in sports cars. The connection is narrow.
